Inspired by the memory of staring up at the sky through the branches of trees my paintings reveal a fascination with transparency and the sense that one is looking both at and through. Ephemeral shadows and light flickers are captured and made permanent. Each color is a voice in a fugue – a harmony where each part has an equal role to play. Edges are painted by hand rather than being taped as the transition between the colors needs to be smooth.
The forms used in the paintings originate from photographs of shadows, drawn over to simplify and isolate the most interesting forms. Then colors are chosen for each form to allow enough variation in color mixes for the different transparencies to be distinct from each other. These color overlays are mixed from opaque paint in such a way that the color appears to be a transparent layer of one color over another.
